About Us

HUGGSS Away From Home is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to ease the transition for foster children, or children who are not living at home, by filling the gap with funding and resources.

Our Story

While working for the courts, I grew frustrated seeing foster children come to court without having basic needs. I grew frustrated that the Judge, on numerous occasions,  would open his wallet on the bench to supply the money needed to get the items the kids were lacking. Kids would need anything from glasses to underwear, but they were not provided because the state had not disbursed the funding. One day, I decided that instead of complaining about it, I was going to do something about it.

The first three years we were able to donate backpacks and school supplies to every foster kid living in the 4th Judicial District. Our focus then shifted to purchasing and stocking Care Cabinets in Anderson, Coffey, Franklin, and Osage counties.. In 2022 we began accepting applications for support or reimbursement for specific needs.

Our Care Cabinets are  located in the juvenile intake rooms in each county. They contain basic needs such as  bags, snacks, lovies, coloring books, activities, and hygiene products. These items are picked out by the child as they are processed and wait for placement.

Applications for support can be submitted by, or on behalf of, a child who is living outside of their parental home. This includes foster, respite, and any other temporary housing. Once submitted, the board will determine if the request meets the standard of requirements. Once approved, a full or partial reimbursement will be issued or, the requested item will be supplied directly to the requestor.
